About Auli with Chopta Chandrashila:
Auli with Chopta–Chandrashila is a scenic Himalayan region located in the Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand, India, at an altitude ranging from around 2,500 m (8,202 ft) to 4,000 m (13,123 ft). Auli is renowned as one of India’s premier skiing destinations, while Chopta is a pristine hill station that serves as the base for the Tungnath–Chandrashila trek. Chandrashila summit offers breathtaking 360-degree views of major Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kamet, and Dunagiri, making the region popular among trekkers, nature lovers, and adventure enthusiasts.
The area is surrounded by dense oak, rhododendron, and conifer forests, alpine meadows, and snow-covered slopes during winter. From December to March, Auli remains blanketed in snow, providing ideal conditions for skiing, with training facilities operated by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam. During summer and early autumn, the region blooms with a rich variety of high-altitude flora, including several medicinal and rare plant species, while Chopta remains lush and green, often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.”
Auli with Chopta–Chandrashila also holds deep religious significance. Tungnath Temple, located on the route to Chandrashila, is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar. It is believed that Adi Shankaracharya visited this region in the 8th century AD and played a key role in reviving Hindu pilgrimage traditions here. Due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather in peak winter months, accessibility can be limited at higher altitudes, but for most of the year the region remains hospitable and attracts visitors seeking spiritual peace, adventure, and unmatched Himalayan beauty.
